Policy Snapshot

July 26, 2024

Last week, AMDA, along with the American Medical Association and more than 50 national and state medical societies, sent a letter to Congressional leaders urging them to prioritize and advance several key bills and proposals to reform Medicare physician payment.

The letter highlighted four key reforms as foundational components of strengthening the current payment system. These reforms would refine the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) to accurately reflect the fiscal and clinical realities of medical practice today:

  • Enacting an annual, permanent inflationary payment update in Medicare that is tied to the Medicare Economic Index (MEI)
  • Budget neutrality reforms
  • An overhaul of MACRA’s Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)
  • Modifications to Alternative Payment Models (APM)
