PALTmed’s inaugural Business of Medicine Symposium on June 4 will enable clinicians and other leaders working in the post-acute and long-term care continuum to learn and discuss how business trends are impacting their daily work, the quality of care for their patients, and the effectiveness of their teams. Featuring a combination of speaker presentations, panel discussions, and small group breakout sessions, the agenda includes:
- Let’s Get to Business: How Do Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Communities Make Money?
- Embracing Technology to Ease Workload Burdens: A Look to Solutions
- Advantages of Working in Non-Private Equity versus Private Equity-Backed Groups and Things to Consider in the Upcoming Industry Consolidation
- ACO Relationship Tips: When to Commit, How to Break Up, and What to Do When You Get Dumped?
- The Anatomy of a Transaction: Understanding the Value of Your Practice, Due Diligence, and What Happens After Sale of Your Practice
Chris Darling, MHA, founder of Healthcare Practice Solutions, was involved in planning the symposium. As he explains, “in addition to all of the clinical information that PALTmed has been providing to post-acute and long-term care clinicians, [it’s critical to] share some of the business realities behind post-acute and long-term care medicine…such as the impact of venture capital investment in this space and the impact of changing CMS regulations. This is a very important area that has often been overlooked, not just in post-acute and long-term care but in health care in general.”
With virtual events becoming more common in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Darling says it makes sense to conduct the symposium that way. “Creating a virtual setting in which clinicians can come in and learn about the business of medicine without having to get on an airplane was a great opportunity,” he notes, emphasizing again that the information is a critical part of health care that impacts the practice of medicine as well as the way clinicians and patients interact.
Speaking of patients, Mr. Darling believes they will perhaps be the biggest beneficiaries of the information provided during the symposium. “From a businessperson, my answer is probably a bit unusual,” he admits. “[But] I think the patients will ultimately benefit the most from having their clinicians and others understand how business factors impact the way medicine is practiced and the way care is delivered in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and across the continuum of senior living centers.”
Mr. Darling is excited about the symposium’s agenda and speakers and believes they will answer several important questions, including, “What is the impact of business? What do we need to take into consideration, both good and bad? And how can we incorporate that into ultimately providing the best patient care possible?”
For attendees with additional questions, there will be plenty of opportunities to quiz the speakers and talk to other attendees during a virtual networking happy hour.
In addition to participating in the symposium, Mr. Darling urges individuals involved in PALTC to take advantage of everything PALTmed offers. “PALTmed is a great resource, and it's something that we need to continue to develop and grow,” he says. “Our clinicians in post-acute and long-term care medicine are taking care of the sickest patients in the industry. And we need to think about how we cannot just do a good job today but also plan to do a good job in the future.”
