The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is signaling a renewed focus on ensuring that remote patient monitoring (RPM) services are used and billed correctly. Following a recent review highlighted by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), CMS has released information underscoring the importance of compliance with Medicare requirements for RPM.

According to the OIG report, approximately 43% of Medicare beneficiaries who received RPM did not receive all three required components of the service. These findings have prompted CMS to call for greater oversight and a clearer understanding of when and how RPM should be furnished and billed, raising the stakes for clinicians and practices offering these services.
