The Trump administration has appointed Thomas Keane, a longtime Health and Human Services (HHS) official, to lead the newly formed Office of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ASTP/ONC). The move comes as part of a broader effort to modernize healthcare through technology, data integration, and AI.
Keane will oversee key priorities, including improving interoperability of electronic medical records (EMRs). This includes advancing open standards like FHIR to ensure seamless, secure data sharing between providers and better access for patients.
His appointment follows a major HHS reorganization in July 2024 that consolidated health tech functions under ASTP/ONC to streamline innovation and enhance cybersecurity. Keane is expected to play a critical role in driving a more connected and data-driven U.S. healthcare system.
