Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Ron Wyden (D-OR), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) are urging the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a new investigation into the quality of care at assisted living facilities and the effectiveness of state Medicaid oversight. This follows a 2018 GAO report that found inconsistent reporting standards across states. In response, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) introduced new rules to improve monitoring, but these won’t take effect until 2027. The senators are asking GAO to assess the progress since 2018, the types of incidents identified, and the effectiveness of CMS’s new oversight measures to ensure better protection for residents.
